That's because he wrote in a clean, well-lighted place. Heh-heh, little Hemingway humor here. I love that while he was living in Key West, it was not fashionable for "nice" people, married or not, to sleep in one bed. So he had the two double beds' legs tied together while he enjoyed the company of Martha (I think it was after Pauline and before Mary) and when he had company, the servants separated the beds. Elegant touch, indeed.
